Alpaca FAQ’s

Q: How many types of alpacas are there?
A: There are two types in Australia Huacaya and Suri.

Q: Do alpacas spit?
A: Yes they do but more so at each other than at people.

Q: Can I have just one alpaca?
A: NO, definitely not they are a herd animal so the minimum you could have would be two.

Q: How long do alpacas live for?
A: Alpacas can live up to 20 years or even longer.

Q: Do I have to shear an alpaca?
A: Yes, alpacas need to be shorn every year.

Q: What do alpacas eat?
A: Alpacas are ruminants and graze on pasture. They have the same animal per acre ration as sheep (4 alpacas per 1 acre of land) You can also supplement feed giving them lucerne, and some grains.

Q: What are baby alpacas called?
A: A baby alpaca is called a Cria. Females are pregnant for 11 months.

Q: What are alpacas good for?
A: Alpacas are used for a number of different things. You can have two as pets, 2-3 in a mob of sheep as herd guards and alpacas are mainly bred for their fibre for making yarn and clothing. Alpacas can also be bred for meat.
